Integration Partner, Founder Najimudu Empowerment Initiative (NEI), Kenya
Connect on LinkedInKaunda Bill Gwendo is a social entrepreneur and disability rights champion who founded the Najimudu Empowerment Initiative (NEI) in 2018 after witnessing the systemic barriers faced by people with disabilities in rural Kenya. Born in Kakamega County and raised in a family where his younger brother has cerebral palsy, Kaunda developed an early understanding of how inaccessible infrastructure and social stigma limit opportunities for people with disabilities.
With a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from the University of Nairobi and certification in Project Management from the Kenya Institute of Management, Kaunda has built NEI into one of Kenya's most impactful disability-focused NGOs. Under his leadership, NEI has trained over 2,500 people with disabilities in digital literacy, supported 800 individuals in starting small businesses, and advocated for policy changes that have improved accessibility in 15 Kenyan counties.
As Waide Mobility's Regional Partnership Director for East Africa, Kaunda leverages his extensive network of disability organizations, government contacts, and community leaders to ensure Waide's technology reaches those who need it most. He has facilitated partnerships with the Kenya National Association of the Deaf, the Kenya Union of the Blind, and the Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya, creating a robust ecosystem for technology adoption and user feedback.
Kaunda's advocacy work extends beyond Kenya's borders. He serves on the East African Disability Forum's executive committee, has represented Kenya at three UN conferences on disability rights, and was recognized as a "Young African Leader" by the African Union in 2022. His vision is to create an Africa where people with disabilities are not just included, but celebrated as valuable contributors to society's progress.
